- Eco-Therapy in Action: Addressing Climate Concerns in Clinical Work [PDF size: 72 MB]
Description:
Last summer’s heat broke historic records. Worldwide, all living creatures suffered through dangerous droughts, heatwaves, and tropical storms, while wildfires became more deadly and touched more places than ever before. With climate change hitting home for two out of three Americans, and more than half worried about its effects on their mental health, becoming a climate-aware therapist is quickly becoming a basic competency and new area of specialization. The mainstay of good ecotherapy is your own “environmental identity.” This self-concept and sense of relationship with nature provides the base on which to build client-specific, ecotherapy interventions. In this experiential workshop, you’ll discover how to:
- Explore one’s environmental identity, beliefs, and experiences
- Adapt your clinical orientation and skills to address clients’ environmental and climate concerns, and add new modalities like walking therapy
- Assess your clients’ sources of environmental well-being and resilience as well as their sense of environmental traumas or injustice
- Integrate ethics, community needs, and marketing when providing environmental interventions with diverse individuals
